Anzac Day is a time to reflect and remember all Australians who have served and given their lives for our country. It’s a day to commemorate the Anzac spirit, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice. Anzac Day honours those who have served in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions.
On 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. It was the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.
The Gallipoli peninsula has a strong connection to Bayside with its very own Brighton Beach, located just to the south of Anzac Cove, named after Bayside’s own. This was the initial intended landing point for the Anzac troops.
Over the seven-month duration at Gallipoli, Brighton Beach served as a secondary store camp and field hospital as well as a popular bathing beach for the troops.
