Residents are invited to provide feedback on the allowance Gannawarra Shire Council’s Mayor and Councillors receive for serving the community.
Councillors resolved at the April 2021 Council Meeting to invite feedback on a proposal to set the Councillor allowance at $21,049 per annum, with the Mayoral allowance to be $62,884 per annum. An amount equivalent to the superannuation guarantee of 9.5 per cent would also be applicable to Councillor and Mayoral allowances.
“Mayors and councillors are entitled to receive an allowance while performing their duties as an elected official. These duties include attending meetings and representing the community at functions both locally and outside of the municipality,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.
“As part of the implementation of the Local Government Act 2020, a Remuneration Tribunal will be created to determine Mayoral, Deputy Mayoral and Councillor allowances for all municipalities across the State. However, until the Remuneration Tribunal makes its first determination on allowances, the allowances framework under the previous Act continues to apply.”
Residents are able to provide feedback on this proposal by completing a submission at www.gsc.vic.gov.au/publicnotices, emailing [email protected] or writing to Gannawarra Shire Council, PO Box 287, Kerang VIC 3579.
“Feedback received will help determine the final Mayoral and Councillor allowances, which will be decided upon by Council at its June meeting,” Mayor Gillingham said.
