City of Swan citizens receive prestigious award

The City of Swan Council awarded the title of Honorary Freeman of the City to three deserving members of the community at the annual Mayoral Dinner on Saturday April 17, 2021.

Cr John McNamara, Cr David Lucas and Mrs Margaret Kidson received the prestigious honour for their outstanding level of achievement in their field of activity and exceptional contribution to the community over many decades.

City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey said each recipient upheld the highest personal integrity, demonstrated outstanding leadership, and had a distinguished record of service to the community.

Cr John McNamara

Ballajura resident Cr John McNamara has dedicated more than 24 years to the City of Swan.  First elected to Council in 1997, John continues to be a strong advocate for localised aged care, improved resourcing for local Police stations, and adequate recreation facilities for seniors.

In 2009, Cr McNamara’s contributions to local government were recognised by WALGA when he received the Long and Loyal Service Award.  He was also recognised for his service to the East Metropolitan Regional Council and the Ballajura Lions’ Club.

Cr McNamara has a strong association with the Ballajura Soccer Club and is a life member of the club for his outstanding leadership and contribution to the sport.

Cr David Lucas

Beechboro resident Cr David Lucas is a man of many hats, having volunteered his time to the community in a number of ways.

Cr Lucas has served almost three decades on Council, including a period as Deputy Mayor and Mayor, and is a passionate advocate for his community of Beechboro, Lockridge and Bennet Springs. 

Cr Lucas continues to work tirelessly to improve the lives of young people and those of disadvantaged and multicultural backgrounds.  He is also an active volunteer in his community, serving as President of the Beechboro Resident’s Action Group, a bus driver for Brockman House and was the President of one of WA’s largest shooting clubs to name a few.

In 2009, Cr Lucas’ was recognised by WALGA when he received the Distinguished Service Award for this work.

Mrs Margaret Kidson

Mrs Margaret Kidson is a well-respected, renowned and passionate representative of Ellenbrook and Guildford.

Mrs Kidson was the first female leader of the Shire of Swan Council.  Her determination to break the glass ceiling has encouraged and empowered local women to seek elected office.

During her 14 years as a Councillor, Mrs Kidson advocated for the protection of the Swan Valley from development, recorded and preserved the history of Guildford, and defended the rights of low-income earners and Homeswest residents during the re-development of Stratton in 1990.

Mrs Kidson also established VCR 88.5FM Ellenbrook Radio and was instrumental in the progress of the Ellenbrook Returned and Services League (RSL).  Working until her late 70’s, Mrs Kidson coordinated the quiz nights to raise funds for the RSL and organised the Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day services.

Mrs Kidson was also heavily involved with the Garrick Theatre in Guildford and a number of youth projects, providing opportunities for young people to develop their personal skills in a safe and secure environment.
