Planning a renovation or spring clean? Have a plan for how you’re going to dispose of your unwanted items.
Wyndham City Mayor Cr Adele Hegedich said household waste, particularly hard waste, had increased as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns, especially among residents who had done work to their home over that time.
“Many residents used their free time over the past year to clean out their homes or renovate, resulting in higher than usual levels of unwanted furniture and other household items,” Cr Hegedich said.
“While the majority of Wyndham residents are doing the right thing to properly dispose of this waste, Council receives on average 150 requests a week relating to illegal dumping.”
“There are no excuses for dumping rubbish around Wyndham, especially when all residents have access to three free hard waste collections each year – including renters.”
“Our hard waste collections are always in high demand, so I encourage residents to book in a collection at least two weeks before you would like your items picked up.”
“If you’re looking to dispose of your hard waste immediately, you can also use your waste voucher and take your waste to the Transfer Station at the Werribee Refuse Disposal Facility from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday and from 8.30am to 4pm on Saturday.”
“Please remember that it is illegal to dump rubbish on vacant blocks, the side of the road and other public areas.”
“When rubbish is dumped on private land it has to be removed by the landowner at their cost. This is simply not fair and unnecessary with the services available from Council.”
“People caught dumping rubbish will be made clean up the mess and face fines of between $330 and $8,000 - or even more depending on the severity and type of dumping. Some of these offences can carry a criminal conviction.”
“If you have had home renovations done, please make sure that the tradesperson disposes of any waste legally.”
