Armidale Regional Council is excited to support a series of workshops being organised by Southern New England Landcare and Sustainable Living Armidale to prompt people to think about whether their rural lifestyle block is ready for future climate related weather events.

CEO of Southern New England Landcare Karen Zirkler said the free workshops will centre around people’s previous experiences with natural disasters such as such as drought, fire or flood and what lessons were learned from these events.

“As a community we are likely to benefit from more resilient food production, homes and natural environments if we have the sometimes difficult conversations about what changes are needed,” said Ms Zirkler.

“By helping folks share their ideas and experiences, these workshops will highlight what can be done, and help others see what might be possible for them in their particular situation.”

Issues such as selecting the right species of trees for the land and the changing ecology, and installing additional water tanks are just some examples of what the workshops will suggest for those needing to prepare their properties.

Council’s General Manager James Roncon said they will be a great opportunity for landholders right across the region.

“After a tough few years of drought and bushfires, Council is happy to support these workshops as they will help people share their experiences and ensure everyone is as prepared as possible for future weather events,” said Mr Roncon.

“We live in an area that is prone to a range of natural disasters, so it’s important the community is educated about these matters.”

The first workshop was held on April 17 in Guyra, with the next two scheduled for Saturday 1 May and Saturday 8 May. A final presentation and forum will be held on Thursday 20 May.

The workshops are being coordinated by Southern New England Landcare Ltd. in partnership with Sustainable Living Armidale Inc. and are funded by Armidale Regional Council.
