Walhalla to host Steampunk Gala this August

Published on 30 April 2021

It’s full steam ahead for an event to take place in Walhalla that melds Victorian era fashions with futuristic techno gizmos.

The inaugural Steampunk Gala in Walhalla is set for 28-29 August and is expected to attract Steampunk fans from near and far to the historic gold mining town.

Getting a handle on just what Steampunk is remains mysterious, but it’s safe to describe it as a cross between Victorian era fashions, music and art powered by steam, along with futuristic technologies that featured in the works of such well-known nineteenth century authors as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne.

The two-day event will feature rides on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, tours of the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, themed magic shows, a fashion parade, teapot duels, horse-drawn carriage rides, colourful musical performers, and many other fun-filled Steampunk-inspired activities.

The Steampunk Gala becomes the latest in Baw Baw Shire Council’s stable of popular events that over the past years have included a special outdoor evening performance by the Australian Ballet, hosting the first-ever Village Feast by the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and the World Jousting Championships.

Tickets will go on sale shortly and numbers will be limited to ensure those in attendance receive the full Steampunk experience.

The event will be run in accordance with COVID Safe guidelines.
