City of Darwin has given the go-ahead for final detailed design to progress the proposed new $25 million Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

Following on from consultation of the concept design in 2020, Council, in discussion with local architects Ashford Group Pty Ltd, has taken on board the community and stakeholder feedback received.

Changes to the original master plan include:

An expansion of the 50-metre pool design to incorporate eight lanes Shade over all three areas of water A basketball half-court and a large grassed area for informal ball games Swimming clubhouse and office space moved closer to the 50-metre pool Change rooms and amenities have been re-positioned to improve functionality and access across the site.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said that it is great to see the plans for the Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre moving forward.

“This is an important step in the process towards construction commencing towards the end of this year.

“We have taken on feedback that we received during the consultation process and have made some significant changes to what was initially proposed. The changes made will not affect the purpose of the development, which is to create a fun, versatile and relaxing space for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy.”

Council is looking to fund the project through grants and external borrowings, and will now prepare to go out to tender for detailed design over the next couple of months.
