Canterbury-Bankstown’s night life has come alive with thousands of people visiting our City to celebrate Ramadan.

Restaurants are doing a roaring trade as locals and visitors break their fast – tantalised by a vast array of delicacies and constantly changing menus. Across the City people are lapping up the atmosphere and our vibrant culture and doing it all in a COVID-Safe environment.

Halla Sharouk, one of the Sharouk sisters who won the Family Food Fight television series in 2017, said visiting Canterbury-Bankstown was always a necessity for her family during Ramadan.

“There’s no better place to break our fast during Ramadan than by visiting the restaurants in Canterbury-Bankstown,” Ms Sharouk said.

“Not only is the food great, but the atmosphere is almost exactly the same as visiting the Middle East during this time.

“It’s an experience you don’t want to miss because almost all the restaurants change their menus to include specialties.”

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said Ramadan is the perfect time to explore new foods, culture and traditions the community has to offer.

“Our Eat Global Visit Local directory is the perfect guide to experiencing flavours from all over the world,” Mayor Asfour said.

“There are so many great local businesses here, right on our doorstep!”

Owner of Lakemba’s Island Dreams Cafe, Alimah Bilda said Ramadan was an important time for her business and their customers.

“We’re always excited during Ramadan because there is a different vibe within the community,” Ms Bilda said.

“We serve traditional Cocos Keeling Island Malay cuisine and during Ramadan we’re normally outside the shop with a stall throughout the night serving customers.

“This sort of traditional Malay food isn’t well known in the wider community, so we love receiving customers trying different cuisines.

“I am yet to serve a customer who doesn’t eventually come back for more.”
