City of Canterbury Bankstown wishes everyone celebrating Ramadan a happy and safe month.

“Ramadan is a very important time for many people across the City,” Mayor Khal Asfour said.

“We recognise its significance and fully support our community while they continue to observe the holy month during the current climate.”

Like last year, NSW Health restrictions have impacted how Ramadan can celebrated in Canterbury-Bankstown.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to run the Ramadan Nights Lakemba event this year,” Mayor Asfour said.

“This is because we cannot host a COVID-Safe event, under the Public Health Order, related to public gatherings, issued on 29 March 2021.”

However, there are still many other ways the community can mark the occasion and break their fast safely.

“We are encouraging everyone to explore new foods, different cultures and traditions in COVID-Safe ways,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Restaurants and food outlets along Haldon Street - and throughout the City - are still legally allowed to operate at night, as long as they have COVID Safety Plans as required by the NSW Government.

“Council has met with NSW Health and local Police to seek assurances they have measures in place for the safety of our community.”
