CBCity celebrates seniors' 'Immeasurable contributions'

The City of Canterbury Bankstown is shining a light on saying thanks to all senior community members, as it hosts more than 20 events during its Seniors Festival celebrations this month.

Seniors aged 55 years and older are being encouraged to take part in free activities, ranging from a unique initiative that connects seniors with enthusiastic local teens teaching them how to better use technology, to social outings, a concert and theatre performance, exercise classes and more.

“I am incredibly proud of each and every senior person in our City, and want to take a moment to thank them for building the foundations to our society today,” Mayor Khal Asfour said.

“They have played a crucial role in establishing our City’s identity before us, as well as our own personal identities.

“And, as this year’s theme of In Our Nature points at, seniors are so full of resilience and life experiences for us to embrace, learn and benefit from.

“During this year’s Seniors Festival, and beyond it, I’d encourage all of us to pause and say thank you to those seniors we are fortunate enough to still have in our own lives.”

According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, Canterbury-Bankstown has more than 85,000 seniors aged 55 years and older.

Council has worked with organisations such as the Riverwood Community Centre, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and Bankstown Sports Centre to deliver a Seniors Festival event program that promises fun, personal growth and development.

Mayor Asfour was pleased to announce CBCity is also facilitating catered welcome back your Library events in addition to running the popular Seniors Festival Concert and more.

“I’m excited for our seniors who can enjoy waterfront views during lunch on a fun trip to the Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler, or learn how to salsa, play golf and lawn bowls, discover the benefits of aqua aerobics or take part in a balance and falls prevention activity,” he said.

“You are never too old to have fun, or to learn new things.”

Informative workshops will also be available to offer seniors and their families ways to best safeguard themselves from becoming victims of scam or fraud, as well as discover what My Aged Care services and financial advice is available to them, to ensure more peace of mind.
