Master Plan underway for Longford Racecourse
Northern Midlands Council has announced it will collaborate with Tasracing to develop a high-level Master Plan and Specific Area Plan to secure the future of the Longford Racecourse precinct.
Mayor Mary Knowles OAM said the preparation of an area overlay for the racecourse site and immediate surrounds would ensure any development of the area was in keeping with the role and function of the racecourse.
“The Master Plan will outline proposed redevelopment for the area, which may include improvements to existing infrastructure, such as the amenities and grandstand, as well as upgrades to current parking and potentially even increased car parking opportunities,” Mayor Knowles said.
“The master planning process will also identify possible improvements to the track, including additional equestrian facilities, horse stalls, a marquee area, as well as a pedestrian and separate vehicle underpass connection to the infield area.
“It will also assist Council to achieve significant environmental improvements through a whole-of-site approach to environmentally sustainable design, based on three key themes: energy, water, and waste.”
As part of this Master Plan, an Area Horse Trail Strategy will be prepared to consider the establishment of a stable and commencement point for a local horse trail.
“The Longford Racecourse is a vital part of the town’s identity, and Council plans to enhance the role and function of this area for investment in the future,” Mayor Knowles said.
“The Longford Races have been held continuously since 1845 and Longford is still home to many horse-training facilities.
“Council wants to assure the community that this space will continue to be valued, and possible future development will ensure the long-term vitality of the racecourse site.”
Tasracing CEO Paul Eriksson said the company welcomed the opportunity to participate in the process as outlined by the Mayor to develop a Master Plan and Specific Area Plan.
“Our long-term focus is to see the Longford Cup community race day continue to flourish while at the same time developing the facility as one of two key northern-based training venues for thoroughbreds,” he said.
“We also see benefit in the broader equestrian community utilising the proposed multi-use facility going forward.”
Community and racing industry consultation on the Master Plan and Specific Area Plan will commence in the coming months.
Mr Eriksson said Tasracing was already engaging with the Tasmanian racing industry on its five-year strategic plan.
“As part of this, we are consulting with our industry partners and stakeholders on an overall infrastructure direction,” he said.
