Open Day - Black Powder Mill: See Where Gunpowder...
City of Brimbank 1 May 2021

See the unique design of an explosives processing building, the only remaining accessible such building of the several manufacturing facilities which operated in Melbourne’s west from the 1860s to the 1980s.

Located on its original site, with its original plant intact and in working order. Explosives were manufactured in Deer Park for civilian and defence purposes from the 1870s until development made these operations untenable.

Recognised by Engineering Heritage Australia as being of national significance. It is a reminder of the thousands of munitions industry workers employed in wartime and the post-war migrant years.

See Black Powder used in the firing of 18th and 19th century firearms by the Historical Re-enactment Society of Australia Incorporated, and spend time with Friends of the Black Powder Mill Incorporated.

Books and DVDs for sale.

The Black Powder Mill is owned by Brimbank City Council and received the “We Are Brimbank Cultural, Arts & Tourism Award” for 2018.
