Saturday, May 15, 2021, 1 – 3:30pm Join us for an artist-led community workshop with local artist and poet, Kylie Johnson (Paper Boat Press) in conjunction with the Ashgrove West Village Precinct Project. This workshop invites the local community to imprint a word that captures this 'place' onto a ceramic tile for future display. About the workshop: In this workshop participants will create their own wall piece based around the name of their street and some leaves that are found in their garden or wandering down through their neighbourhood. Creating and marking a sense of ‘place’ through both words and nature. Participants will be asked to bring a collection of small and fresh (for ease of pressing) leaves and small branches. These will be pressed into a personalised cut and rolled pieced of clay. Kylie will instruct how to stamp the street name or chosen word into the piece, and later in the class how to colour and finish the piece. The pieces will be dried and fired and returned to the library for display and later collection. About the artist: Kylie Johnson is an artist, and published poet who grew up in The Gap and has lived a lot of her adult life in Ashgrove. It was in Ashgrove she started paper boat press 26 years ago, and for the previous 8 years has been running a gallery in Ashgrove Crescent that shows ceramic work made in the studio behind the gallery. Daily you’ll find a pencil in her hand, her hands in clay, or dreaming up the next adventure for her happy little studio to create. About the Ashgrove West Village Precinct Project: Brisbane City Council is working with the local community to revitalise the neighbourhood shopping precinct at Ashgrove West, along Waterworks Road. This is part of the Village Precinct Projects program and Council's commitment to create a city of vibrant neighbourhoods.
