More than $28,000 will be provided to local sporting clubs and community organisations in the latest round of Council grants.
Council has endorsed support for the Cairns BMX Club to stage the Queensland Country Challenge (Country BMX Championships) on 26 June.
The club, which has partnered with AusCycling Queensland to host the event, will receive $10,420 through Council’s Sports Tourism Event Grant program.
The Queensland Country Challenge is anticipated to attract 500 riders, of which 390 are from intrastate.
It is projected that the event will deliver an economic benefit of about $415,000 to the Cairns economy and provide employment equivalent to 2.5 local jobs.
Four community organisations will share in over $14,000 from Council’s Go Clubs Program.
Go Clubs Essentials Assistance funding of $5000 will be provided to both the Smithfield Child Care Centre for an upgrade to a main electrical switchboard, and to the Cairns Vigoro Association for the installation of a concrete slab at Johnson Park.
Go Clubs Field Maintenance grants have also been approved for the Cairns City Kennel Club Inc ($1,600) and the Holloways Cairns Croquet Club ($3,017).
FNQ Volunteers Inc will be provided venue hire of the Tanks Arts Centre to the value of $3,700 for its Volunteer Expo, to be held 25 July.
The community event showcases volunteer opportunities for Cairns residents and provides a valuable platform for not-for-profit organisations to showcase their work.
Organisers anticipate 30 organisations to take part in the event, including COUCH, Cairns Meals on Wheels, the Cancer Council, Green Spaces and PCYC, and 500 people to attend.
