Liverpool City Council Mayor Wendy Waller says she is distressed by the current coronavirus outbreak in India.
“I am saddened to hear every day about the continuing COVID-19 crisis in India. The high death toll, the suffering of people with the disease and those caring for them, is immense” Mayor Waller said.
“We have a large Indian community in Liverpool. More than 13,000 people in Liverpool have Indian ancestry and that proportion of the population is more than double the national average.”
“Many of these people have family and friends living in India. I urge anyone with contacts in India to reach out and check on their welfare. While we may not be able to offer support in person, our virtual support can help make a difference.”
Mayor Waller is also concerned about the mental health of Indian Australians in the Liverpool area amid this ongoing crisis.
“For those who are in regular contact with your family and friends in India, please look after your mental health. We cannot underestimate the toll that will be felt due to this tragedy, even from afar.”
Mayor Waller also offered her condolences for residents of Liverpool who have lost a loved one in India from COVID-19.
