Council has kicked off its Youth Say program, a series of five workshops held over a month to capture and reflect the views and aspirations of young people in the Shire’s 10 year Community Strategic Plan.
Seven students from Mullumbimby High School are participating in the program.
“Our aim is to really listen to the students about what issues they are facing, what is important to them about living here and what a better or different future might look like for the Byron Shire,” Council’s Director Corporate and Community Services, Vanessa Adams said.
“This is big thinking and I think the students are enjoying the chance to explore a broad range of issues of importance to them from illegal camping to litter reduction, youth activities to public transport and accessibility and to have their ideas and solutions considered and debated,” she said.
“We are looking forward to working with this group over the coming weeks; they are actively engaged and willing to share their ideas and insights into how we can create a better future for the Byron Shire community,” Ms Adams said.
Youth Say is also an opportunity to talk with young people about the roles and responsibilities of Council in the community.
Council is hoping to extend the program to other high schools in the Byron Shire next year and interested schools can contact Heather Sills on 6626 7171.
