On Monday 17 May, Bayside City Council proudly raised the rainbow flag at Council Chambers in acknowledgement of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
The day raises awareness for the work still needed to combat violence and discrimination against LGBTIQ+ communities.
Bayside City Council CEO Mick Cummins said that raising the rainbow flag is an important symbol to show that as an organisation we support and embrace our LGBTIQ+ community and we’re starting a conversation about how we can authentically and effectively take action in meaningful ways.
“We recognise that historically we have not done enough to publicly show our support for our LGBTIQ+ community and we recognise there is lots of work to do,” Mr Cummins said.
“We’re committing to being louder in our support and flying the rainbow flag marks our visible allyship.
We are showing our LGBTIQ+ community we’re standing in solidarity against discrimination of any kind.”
In 2017, 76 per cent of local residents in the Goldstein electorate voted for marriage equality and our residents are passionate about caring for community life in Bayside, making it an inclusive, active, healthy, connected and creative experience for all.
A key plank of the Bayside 2050 Community Vision is that every member of the Bayside community is celebrated, included and feels they belong in Bayside.
“We’re listening to our community and taking responsibility for our role in making Bayside a better place for everybody,” Mr Cummins said.
