Reception to thank Hobart’s volunteers

Volunteers from a range of Hobart-based charities and organisations will gather at a special reception tonight in honour of National Volunteer Week (17-23 May).

Each year, the City of Hobart recognises the contributions made by volunteers across the city through a ceremony held in the Hobart Town Hall.

“Sadly, last year’s reception was cancelled because of Covid-19, which makes this year’s event all the more important,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“Across the past 12 months, volunteers have played such a huge role in helping people cope with the many and varied impacts of the pandemic.

“For example, our Community Event of the Year Award for 2021 was presented in January to the Show Hope initiative, through which food and essential items were provided to international students and people living in Hobart on temporary visas and who had lost their jobs as a result of Covid.

“Many of the 50-plus volunteers who worked with the Wellspring Anglican Church to make sure no one went without were international students themselves.”

At tonight’s reception, 90 volunteers will receive certificates of appreciation on behalf of 46 organisations and their fellow volunteers.

“This reception is a small way in which we can give our thanks to the members of our community who go out of their way to help others and make Hobart a great place to live,” Cr Reynolds said.
