Take action this National Reconciliation Week

To mark this year’s National Reconciliation Week, which runs from 27 May to 3 June, Central Highlands Regional Council is asking residents to ‘take action’.

The annual celebration is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

Mayor Kerry Hayes said this year’s theme, ‘More than a word. Reconciliation takes action’, urges people to make more impactful contributions to the movement.

‘Our region has a rich Indigenous history that we recognise as an integral part of our community’s identity,’ he said.

‘Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and as a nation.

‘At the heart of this journey are strong, respectful relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

‘As a council, we are committed to continuing to build these relationships and implement our 2020-2021 Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan.’

Mayor Hayes said there were a number of ways for people to show their support this reconciliation week and start their own educational journey.

‘We will be hosting events in Emerald and Blackwater that the community are welcome to come along to,’ he said.

‘You can also purchase one of our Indigenous polo shirts, designed by local artist Andrew Doyle, either online or at a council office.

‘There are displays and interesting resources in our library branches, or just head to our website to discover more about Indigenous history and traditions.’
