Volunteer week highlights need for more unsung heroes

National Volunteer Week is all about giving back to those who give the most.

So to mark the annual event, Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Kerry Hayes is asking all residents to take the time to say thanks to a volunteer.

‘This week we acknowledge each and every volunteer across the region for their hard work and dedication; those in the emergency services, charities, sport, art and cultural groups, health services, community organisations, schools and everything in between,’ he said.

‘These unsung heroes strengthen and enrich our communities through their selflessness and they deserve to be celebrated.’

Mayor Hayes said council worked with and relied on many volunteers, particularly in times of disaster.

‘Our Local Disaster Management Group met on Tuesday, as we do regularly, to check in and provide updates on our relevant sectors,’ he said.

‘One of the things brought up was just how challenging it is to get volunteers in the SES and Rural Fire Service.

‘These people play such a critical role for our communities in an emergency, as our recent flood event in the Gemfields showed. I would encourage anyone interested to please make contact and find out more.

‘Even just a few hours of volunteer work, in any organisation or charity, can make a huge impact.’

Wear Orange Wednesday was also on this week, urging people to sport the colour as a thank you to SES volunteers.

SES Local Controller Michelle Bell said it was great to see so many show their support, but new members would be the icing on the cake.

‘Being a volunteer is very rewarding, the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and help your community,’ she said.

‘As an SES volunteer, I have been able to assist my community and neighbouring communities in their time of need. I have even gone to New South Wales to help out during the floods. I have met wonderful people and gained many new friendships during my time.

‘If you have an urge to help your community, learn new skills and have time to give please look at volunteering with an organisation, it is so rewarding to give back.’
