National Road Safety Week: Drive to Survive

This week is National Road Safety Week and Snowy Monaro Regional Council is reminding our region’s road users of the importance of driving and riding safely.
Safer Australian Roads and Highways is the organisation behind the safety week initiative, which aims to prevent the 1,200 lives lost and 44,000 people who are seriously injured on Australian roads each year. Highlighting the importance of this message to our region, Monday saw a major accident at Long Plain with two serious injuries.
“To mark National Road Safety Week I have made the pledge to drive to survive and I encourage everyone in the Snowy Monaro to do the same. Living rurally and regionally we have to rely on our own cars to get around, so it is essential that we look out for ourselves, our families and each other by driving safely,” said Mayor Peter Beer, Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
“Too many lives are lost or irreversibly changed for the worse, and we all have a part to play in reducing the casualties on our roads each year.”
As part of supporting the safety week, Council customer service officers and visitors centre staff are wearing the yellow ribbon, with posters throughout Council facilities allowing anyone to go online and make the pledge.
Participating organisations, including Council, have this week been highlighting “daily themes” as part of an effort to spread awareness and educate road users. Speeding features heavily, as it is the most common cause of crashes in the Snowy Monaro and in many other rural and regional areas.
In addition, Council held a Helper Learner Driver Workshop for supervisors and learner drivers as well as a Survive the Ride Workshop for motorcyclists, in conjunction with Snowy Valleys Council. Tickets are still available for a Survive the Ride workshop for motorcyclists, two On the Road 65Plus workshops and a final Safer Learner Driver workshop – coming up from Saturday 22 May through Thursday 27 May 2021.
