The new Mareeba Pound and Animal Refuge Facility on Hickling avenue is nearing completion.
Mayor Angela Toppin said she was excited to see the project coming to fruition.
“The construction of a new facility was long overdue as the existing facility was beyond repair. Thanks to the Queensland Government’s Work for Queensland Program, Council has been able to construct a modern multipurpose pound and animal refuge,” Cr Toppin said.
“The facility is an important service for the community and Council in terms of catering for impounded animals found wandering at large and providing a temporary shelter for cats and dogs seeking a new home.”
Mareeba Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest from organisations to lease the premises for the operation and management a an animal facility.
“Council will consider all options on how best the facility is managed going forward on a long-term lease arrangement,” Mayor Toppin said.
It is expected the facility will be operational by September 2021 and have provision for an animal refuge, animal impounding facility and boarding kennels.
EXPRESSION OF INTEREST TO MAKE A SPLASHMareeba Shire Council is seeking expression of interest for the management of the Shire’s swimming pool facilities and the Dimbulah Caravan Park.

“Council will consider all submissions for the management and operation of the community facilities before deciding whether to invite written tenders from preferred applicants.” Cr Toppin said.
