MEDIA RELEASE: 2021 Volunteer Recognition Awards Friday 21st May 2021The West Tamar Council’s Volunteer Recognition Awards as part of National Volunteer Week 2021, were held on Friday 21st May 2021 from 6:15pm at the Riverside Golf Club, with approximately 100 guests in attendance.
The awards recognise volunteer contributions to the West Tamar Community, with presentations made in the categories of ‘Volunteer of the Year’, ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’ and ‘Volunteer Group of the Year’.
The 2021 winners are:
Volunteer of the Year – Greg Squires who is a local farmer in the Kelso area. In 2018 he sought involvement in the West Tamar Council’s Northern Area Advisory Group and West Tamar Landcare to help him tackle a community problem. Their combined efforts resulted in the Lower West Tamar Cat Management Group. Greg has worked consistently with this committee to develop ethical and socially responsible pet ownership. Young Volunteer of the Year – Cooper McKercher is an active and involved member if the West Tamar Youth Advisory Council, volunteering for numerous events including Lead Inspire Grow Camp, Catch it in the Catchment, Youth Festivals, Schools Out, Skate Comps and The Rock Challenge. In addition to this, he is also a volunteer at the Legana Youth Centre assisting with running weekly programs. Volunteer Group of the Year – West Tamar Rotary Club is a local volunteer club, working to build relationships and better the local and wider community. It is a support network that actively fundraises with the aim to return funds back into our community. The club is involved in countless community events and initiatives, always ready to lend a supportive hand.
Mayor Christina Holmdahl said “The West Tamar Council Volunteer Recognition Awards acknowledge those who have consistently given selflessly to others as valued members of our local community. On behalf of the West Tamar Council and everyone in our community, I thank them most sincerely for their contributions”.
Category winners, nominees and nominators were celebrated over a light dinner, with Just Flare providing background music and guest speaker, West Tamar Youth Mayor Chloe White.
