To celebrate National Volunteer Week, Ararat Rural City Council has thanked all volunteers with a special video message from the Mayor.

Mayor Jo Armstrong emphasised the importance of recognising the efforts of volunteers who make economic, social, and cultural contributions across our municipality.

“Like most rural towns, volunteers form the backbone of our community – they help provide much-needed services to our city and it’s a way of looking out for one another,” Cr Armstrong said.

“This past year, we’ve seen so many volunteers participate in community response efforts across our region – from Meals on Wheels volunteers delivering meals to vulnerable community members to the Ararat Community Relief Centre providing a safe space to call for help and advice – the list of acts of selflessness is endless.

“Let’s not forget the volunteers who play a huge role in keeping our community safe, strong and more inclusive from our local SES, CFA to sporting and community groups.”

Ararat Rural City Council alone has over 40 volunteers across various services including Ararat Gallery TAMA, Gum San Chinese Cultural Centre, Ararat Town Hall, Visitor Information Centre, Ararat Fitness Centre, Ararat Regional Library, Meals on Wheels, and the Ararat Community Relief Centre.

COVID-19 has changed the way Council celebrated this year. To acknowledge those who have given their time to Council run services, we shared a letter of thanks along with a gift voucher to spend at a local café.

“Our volunteers are invaluable, and Council greatly appreciates all they’ve done and continue to do for our community,” she continued.

As volunteering restrictions ease, Council is excited to have familiar faces return and hopes to see new ones in the mix. Some volunteers have decided not to resume their roles as a result of the pandemic and health concerns.

“Without the help of our volunteers, there are many services and programs that simply could not operate,” said Cr Armstrong.

“I, too, have been a volunteer for a number of organisations and together with my fellow councillors share a deep appreciation for the joy that comes from volunteering.

“We know that effort brings reward and those who volunteer tend to be happier and healthier.

“No matter how small the act – doing something is better than doing nothing at all.  I implore our community to give something new a go, even if it’s just for one hour a week,” she concluded.
