World Elder Abuse Awareness Week Published: 24 May 2021

Cardinia Shire Council is encouraging residents to come along to a free community event in June to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The event will take place on 15 June at the Outlook Community Centre from 10am to 11.30am.

The United Nations (UN) designated 15 June as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in 2011 to raise awareness and knowledge of elder abuse and the various ways it can manifest which includes financial, emotional and physical.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day brings together all community members to combat the issue of elder abuse.

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Councillor Brett Owen said the council had continued its commitment to tackling this issue through the Together We Can initiative.

“To stop, prevent and end family violence in Cardinia Shire takes every one of us to support and report when we see older adults subjected to violence, coercion or abuse,” Cr Owen sad.

“Family Violence, including elder abuse, does not discriminate between age, ability, culture or sexuality.

“As a community, we have the sensibilities to act, rather than be bystanders, to create a place that values equality and respect. We can all play our part.”

The free community event will include a special guest speaker from Seniors Rights Victoria to talk about ‘Protecting Your Rights’ and cover elder abuse, risk, prevention and where to get support and assistance. The Cardinia Age Friendly Alliance team will provide fridge magnets that detail safety information.

Outlook Community Centre is located at 24 Toomuc Valley Road, Pakenham.

Bookings are essential. Please call the Outlook Community Centre directly on 5940 4728 or visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/elderabuse
