Chinatown Car Park to be renamed

Chinatown Car Park in Darwin’s City Centre is to be renamed into a dual name after City of Darwin accepted the proposal at a Council Meeting on Tuesday, 25 May 2021.
The name Dragonfly Car Park has been chosen alongside a Larrakia Name, to be determined at a later date. Suggestions of Birribirrib-ba, Bidjpidji or Barradug Madawa have been provided by Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation.
The Chinatown Car Park was opened in September 2006 and was named to align with the theme of the proposed Chinatown precinct which never came to fruition.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said: “Works are almost complete at the Chinatown Car Park and this is an ideal opportunity for Council to give this car park a more appropriate name as Chinatown was never developed in the city and often confuses visitors.
“The Dragonfly is something that resonates with people in Darwin. It is part of City of Darwin’s logo and depicts the seasonal change in our weather pattern welcoming the dry season.
“I am delighted that we will also be dual naming the car park with a Larrakia name in the future and that local Larrakia artist, Jason Lee, has designed a new façade incorporating the dragonfly that will cover the whole front of the Smith Street side of the building.”
The renaming and rebranding of the Chinatown Car Park will be completed in June 2021.
