Thoughtless vandals tarnish weekend soccer

Joy-riding hoons have wreaked havoc and disrupted the plans of hundreds of soccer players after “tearing up” a sports field in Bass Hill, over the weekend.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour is furious, labelling the incident at the Crest Sporting Complex a “blatant act of vandalism”, which will take several weeks to repair and cost residents thousands of dollars.

“What can you say about this senseless act”, Mayor Asfour said.

“Those responsible have no moral fibre and have no consideration for others, or their property.

“They just wantonly tore through one of our most popular sporting facilities, ploughing through the rain affected playing fields and causing deep trenches.

Mayor Asfour said he couldn’t understand why somebody would do such a thing when the fields are there for all in the community to use.

“I am incredibly disappointed with this complete act of vandalism and so will hundreds of soccer players who use the fields.”

Bankstown District Amateur Football Association (BDAFA) General Manager Leanne Millar said the field is home to the association’s third largest club – the Bankstown Sports Strikers.

“The Crest is one of our most utilised fields,” Ms Millar said.

“I can’t believe someone could do this… it is just so sad.

“What people don’t think about is this won’t just impact the players, it impacts the whole community.”
