A $960,000 upgrade of a section of Old Homebush Road at Gowrie Junction is complete and has received a tick of approval from some of the Region’s youngest residents.

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Infrastructure Committee Chair Councillor Carol Taylor said the project involved reconstructing a two kilometre section of Old Homebush Road from Tower Crescent to Rody Burke Road.

“Around 2,500 vehicles travel on Old Homebush Road every day and it’s a busy link between Gowrie Junction, Meringandan and Highfields,” Cr Taylor said.

“This particular section had deteriorated with time, was in poor condition and required rehabilitation of the pavement surface. The project involved constructing a new, wider section of road as well as reconstructing the existing road pavement.

“New signage, guideposts and line markings were also installed as part of the project and a speed review was undertaken. The works will renew the life of the road and improve safety.”

Works commenced in January 2021 and were completed in April with the road reopening to traffic in early May.

A road closure was in place to accelerate the works to minimise disruption to motorists and the community.

Cr Taylor said the upgrade was welcomed by residents and given the tick of approval from some impressed local school students.

“The road closure that was in place gave road workers a chance to get to know some students from Gowrie State School,” Cr Taylor said.

“We love receiving feedback from the community and the students penned a hand written note to the team sharing their appreciation for the hard work they do to make our Region’s roads safer.”

The Old Homebush Road upgrade was funded through the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program and delivered under Council’s $15 million Regional Rehabilitation Program for 2020-21.

Cr Taylor said maintaining the Region’s road network was a key priority for Council.

“We’re very appreciative of the Federal Government’s $850,000 contribution to this project. Government funding is critical to helping us to maintain the Region’s large road network and stimulates local economic activity.

“Old Homebush Road will be safer for all road users now this project is complete and I would like to thank the community for their patience while these works took place.”
