National Reconciliation Week is held this year between 27 May and 3 June and the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group would like to share understanding, and an opportunity to learn about our history and Sorry Day.
Sorry Day is held annually on 26 May, acknowledging the impact of the forcible removal policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The first Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998, marking the one year anniversary of the ‘Bringing Them Home Report’ being tabled in parliament.
The ‘Bringing Them Home Report’ was the result of an inquiry into the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families; The Stolen Generations. The report brought to light and examined the history of the Stolen Generations and made 54 recommendations for moving forward, including holding a national Sorry Day every year.
