Council is preparing for large swells across the weekend as the Bureau of Meteorology predicts waves exceeding 3-4 metres at beaches across the NSW coast. The risk is increased because this swell is occurring during larger than average tides of over 2 metres and there will also be strong winds over the weekend.

Surfers, swimmers, boaties and rock fishers should be aware that these conditions will make these activities very dangerous.

Rock pools and coastal walkways may also be unsafe as waves will inundate low-lying coastal areas and overtop pathways. Popular walkways such as Marine Parade in Manly may be particularly impacted and require temporary closure for safety reasons.

Erosion may also occur at some beaches which may reduce public access as conditions continue across the weekend.

Northern Beaches Council is working closely with emergency services and other agencies, and will monitor the forecast as it is updated . We have crews on standby to inspect key sites over the weekend to ensure public safety, and to respond with our emergency colleagues as required.

While damage to private properties is not expected at this stage, coastal residents are also encouraged to monitor forecasts.
