As part of Liverpool City Council’s commitment to reduce energy costs and improve efficiency, Council has installed a 42kW solar system, comprising 80 panels at its Council depot on Rose Street, Liverpool.

The solar system installation follows on from Council’s 2020 audit, which identified Council buildings that were consuming significant amounts of energy.

The $50,000 investment into the solar system will lead to cost savings for Council of up to $17,000 a year, after the four-year payback period.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said the project aligns with Council’s strategic direction to provide facilities that are energy-efficient as well as enhancing our sustainability for the long-term.

“We know there are considerable benefits for the use of solar panels on our environment as well as energy cost savings for Council in years to come,” Mayor Waller said.

“There is no better way to take full control of your energy expenditure than by generating your own solar electricity.

“Council recognises the rapid increase of energy costs and this installation is in addition to solar panels previously installed at 13 other Council-owned sites.”

Solar panels are already installed at Liverpool City Library, all of Council’s Childcare Centres, Council Community Centres at Green Valley, Moorebank, Wattle Grove, Chipping Norton, Prestons, amenities buildings at Casula Parklands and the recently completed Cirillo Reserve.

“Council also has a program to improve lighting at parks with solar-powered light installations and continues to monitor and reduce energy consumption,” Mayor Waller said.
