Students at Margaret River Senior High School heard from an exciting range of local businesses this week as part of the RISE to Your Career Expo.
An initiative of the Shire of Augusta Margaret River’s RISE (Resilient Innovative Skilled Employed) program, in partnership with Margaret River Senior High School, the Expo was held for students in years 10, 11 and 12 on Tuesday 1 June 2021.
Over 30 local businesses got involved in the expo, spanning tourism, government, creative industries, brewing, agriculture and sports, to showcase an enormous range of exciting local careers that students may not otherwise have thought about, or know how to pursue.
Sixteen local personalities also got involved in panel discussions including Dan White from Strings Attached Guitar Festival, Gene Hardy from Cape to Cape Explorer Tours, Chanel Bowen from Cinefest Oz, John Dingey from Magic Dirt Trailworx, Spice Mistress Sarina Kamini and more. The panellists discussed their own career pathways and what they have learnt throughout their working lives, while also passing on valuable real-life tips for students to succeed in their own way.
The Shire of Augusta Margaret River were also present with staff from the Recreation Centre, Childcare, Community Development, Human Resources, Planning, Works, Rangers and Parks and Gardens talking to young people about their careers.
Coordinator Community Planning and Development Jason Cleary said it was important to highlight the exciting and diverse array of local careers available and to help young people to see how they can turn their interests and passions into viable careers.
“Young people are faced with a number of choices as they near the end of their High School education, and the RISE to Your Career Expo showcased some of the options available right here in the region.”
“Hearing from local people who have turned their passions into successful careers, shows that it is possible to follow your dreams and that with passion, dedication and an open mind, anything is possible,” he said.
