Athletes head to Cairns ahead of Olympics MEDIA RELEASE

Some of Australia’s elite athletes will converge on Cairns in July and August as part of their final preparations ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Athletics Australia will run training camps at Barlow Park prior to flying to Japan for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Council has committed $42,500 to support the camps, which are expected to include more than 200 athletes and staff, who are each expected to stay for at least two weeks.

The Olympic training camp is scheduled for 8 to 31 July, followed by the Paralympic training camp from 7 to 29 August.

Both camps will be open to spectators and are expected deliver an economic benefit to the city of about $675,000.
