How is the Byron Shire Council preparing to respond to climate change in the next five years? 

What support is Council giving to the community to help people prepare for and respond to climate change?

The answers are in Council’s Draft Climate Change Adaptation Plan (CCAP) which is currently on exhibition.

“The aim of the CCAP is to minimise risks from projected climate change impacts in Byron Shire and improve resilience in our communities, infrastructure and environment,” Rachel Thatcher, Sustainability Officer, said.

Based on the latest projections from leading climate science agencies including CSIRO, BOM and NARCliM (NSW and ACT Regional Climate Modelling), the CCAP identifies four key climate projections:

The CCAP outlines 100 adaptation actions for Council operations to minimise risk before, during and after severe weather events.

“These actions span the whole organisation and include flood controls, coastal management, bushfire fuel reduction and water security,” Ms Thatcher said.

Another aim of the CCAP is to build resilience in the community to help people be more prepared for extreme weather events.

“There are a number of community resilience projects already underway including community workshops, evacuation centre audits, and the launch of our Climate Wise Communities and Emergency Dashboard websites,” she said.

A community information session about the CCAP has been organised for Tuesday, 15 June, at the Council Chambers in Mullumbimby.

It is an opportunity for people to hear what is in the CCAP and learn about some of the things Council is already doing to adapt to climate change.
