Lake Monger Community Shed to be Officially Opened 19 June 2021

The Lake Monger Community Shed will be officially opened by the Town of Cambridge Mayor Keri Shannon during a Civic Event at 2pm on Saturday, 19 June.

The opening of the community facility will mark the culmination of the 14-month construction project. Mayor Keri Shannon said that the Town had been working with the Cambridge Rotary Club to establish a Community Shed within the Town with the Lake Monger location determined as the preferred site by Council in March 2018.

“I wish to acknowledge and thank the Community Shed Chairperson, Mr Max Puddey and his dedicated committee, for seeing this project through to its fruition,” she said.

“With Max’s hours of dedication to the project it came as no surprise that he was a finalist in the Town’s recent Community Volunteer of the Year awards.

Mayor Shannon said that Community Sheds play a vital role in their participant’s mental well-being.

“The enforced lock-downs of the COVID-19 pandemic in the last 16 months has brought to the forefront just how debilitating prolonged isolation can be on mental health.

“The Community Shed will provide a gathering place and hub of social interaction that will hopefully serve as a stimulant for improved mental health for many years to come as a means of breaking down social isolation.”

Mayor Shannon also referred to the other activity zones currently under construction in the area.

“The Lake Monger foreshore has been a hive of activity with two other activation zones due for completion soon,” she said.

“All of these new facilities just further enhance the Lake area as a central community gathering place as it has been for indigenous communities for thousands of years.”
