Engaging critical issues through papermaking at the Gympie Gallery

New to the Gympie Regional Gallery, ‘making paper / making art’ celebrates and documents an emerging community of contemporary Queensland artists who are creating art that addresses social issues through the properties of paper itself.

Available to view until the 22 July, this exhibition features the works of Grace Cuell, Ana Paula Estrada, Fiona Foley, Annique Goldenberg, Sidonie Hall-Jordan, Tim Mosely, JungHa Park, Pamela See and Karen Stone. 

The series of works consider a range of important contemporary issues. Grace Cuell addresses the exorbitant waste of resources, both human and material, involved in the fashion industry. Working with linen and cotton plant fibres, Fiona Foley calls to account the historical institutional abuse of indigenous communities through Queensland legislation. Sidonie Hall-Jordan tackles the complex relationship between ourselves and the bodies that we ‘occupy’ with a plant fibre that hauntingly resembles skin. Karen Stone draws us into a contentious space, focusing on nostalgia, symbolism and the associated memories attached to ‘home’. 

Each of the works on display demonstrate the dynamic capacity of paper as a medium in its own right, to provide artists a unique way to address contemporary issues within art practice.

This exhibition is coordinated by Dr Tim Mosely, convenor for the Print program at Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art (QCA). The exhibiting artists are or were post-graduate students at QCA working with paper in the Print studios.

Entry to the Gympie Regional Gallery at 39 Nash Street is free, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday.
