COUNCIL MEETING

Council’s regular monthly meeting is Thursday 17 June 2021, being held at the Bombala Community Centre. There are a number of important matters up for discussion that I look forward to talking through with my fellow Councillors.

DEVELOPMENT APPLICATIONS:

We have several applications coming before Council for our deliberation. It is worth noting in particular the Jindabyne Equestrian Resort application for a temporary caravan park and campground – if approved, this would go a long way in helping to address the critical shortage of seasonal accommodation, and may additionally help address the shortage of rental properties for longer-term residents.

DONATIONS AND SPONSORSHIPS

We are excited to review the applications received for the latest round of Council’s Donations and Sponsorship program. This is an opportunity for our Council to directly fund community-led and community-minded initiatives and provide much-needed support for the many good ideas that are ineligible for the larger state or federal grants.

JINDABYNE CAMPING 2021 WINTER CAMPAIGN:

The community in and around Jindabyne have long expressed their concerns about informal camping in the area, and this matter before Council will see us discussing the appropriate measure to address this ongoing problem.

COVID saw the introduction of additional restrictions on informal camping, as we cannot implement an appropriate COVID Safe Plan for the Claypits Carpark or any of the other popular areas used for informal camping.

Community members are frustrated with the hygiene and amenity issues that arise from having people live out of what was designed to be a day-use public park.

SNOW SEASON LAUNCH

The snow season is officially underway after the launch events at the resorts over the weekend. Winter is always an exciting time in the Snowy Monaro, with a swelling population and an influx of events and performances usually reserved for the big cities all passing through our region.

I want to give my thanks in advance to everyone in the Snowy Monaro community for their patience and hard work through the season to come.

CEO CANDIDATE INFORMATION SESSIONS

Council’s CEO Peter Bascomb is leading a series of information sessions for anyone who’s ever thought of running in a local government election. I encourage aspiring candidates to attend, and learn more about the time and effort required to sit on a Council. To register, please visit: https://qrco.de/smrc-events
