Primary school students from across the Gannawarra recently benefited from Gannawarra Shire Council commitment to support the municipality’s young leaders.

Council organised for a group of 50 children from nine local primary schools - Cohuna Consolidated School, Kerang Christian College, Kerang Primary School, Kerang South Primary School, Koondrook Primary School, Leitchville Primary School, Murrabit Group School, Lake Charm Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School – to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference, held in Bendigo on 17 May.

“Sponsoring young people to attend leadership opportunities, such as the GRIP Leadership Conference, is one of the priority actions listed in the Gannawarra Shire Council Plan 2017-2021, and Council is pleased to have assisted in sending a contingent of our youngest leaders to this important event since 2017,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Tom O’Reilly said.

“The conference provides an important training and networking opportunity for our students to build confidence for their education journey, both now and into the future.”

This year’s conference theme was It’s Your Time, emphasising that everyone should be ready to lead, be responsible and contribute meaningful ideas.

“It was a fun day out. We learned a lot about leadership,” Murrabit Group School students, Claire and Xavier said.

“This opportunity was a great experience. It has certainly encouraged us to lead.”

Council representatives will visit each school that sent students to the conference later this year to hear from students what they learnt.

“These visits will also enable the students who attended the conference to discuss how they have implemented their learnings from the conference, as well as assess how Council can support future leadership opportunities,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“Council thanks each school for supporting participation of students and looks forward to continuing to work together to develop the leadership potential of our young people.”
