The Shire of Augusta Margaret River is set to reduce electricity costs at its civic administration building by 45% following the recent installation of a 100kW rooftop photovoltaic system.
Shire Sustainability Planning Officer Katie Biggs said the system was anticipated to nearly halve electricity bills and carbon emissions for the next 25 years.
“With a 45% reduction in carbon emissions and electricity costs, this is a great outcome for both the environment and ratepayers,” she said.
“These yearly carbon offsets are the equivalent of planting and growing 1400 trees for the next 10 years or powering 10 homes with 100% renewable energy.”
The installation of the system is linked to the Shire’s recently adopted Climate Action Plan, which sets out to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
“The Shire is dedicated to mitigating climate change and this installation is yet another step towards carbon neutrality,” Katie Biggs said.
The civic administrations new solar PV system complements existing systems on the Margaret River Recreation Centre, Margaret River HEART, Augusta Civic Centre, Margaret River Depot and Margaret River Library.
The latest installation will bring the total to 225kW.
