A win for women in sports

A Sydney council has invested $700,000 to build female friendly and inclusive change rooms at a popular weekend sporting field.

City of Canterbury Bankstown has finished construction of the new amenities building at Graf Park in Yagoona.

The new facility, which is home to the North Bankstown Soccer Club, now boasts:

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said CBCity is leading the way when is comes to increasing female participation in sport.

“A lack of adequate amenities, especially for females, can often be a barrier to participation in grassroots sport,” Mayor Asfour said.

“For too many years, women and girls have been turned off because most local sporting fields only had men’s change rooms, with no private areas to change or shower.

“Having female friendly amenities sends an important message to young girls – they are welcome, safe and encouraged to participate and grow their talents.”

Vice president of the North Bankstown Soccer Club, Catherine Kearns said the whole club is buzzing with excitement and can't wait to move into their new club house.

"Everyone is just so amazed with the new building. We haven't seen anything like this before in our area, tt is a professional first-class facility," Ms Kearns said.

“The new building is clean and safe, it also bigger and fully accessible.

“We cannot wait to show it off!”
