A new transfer station is set to open at the Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre.
Residents will soon be able to access the new site. The final stages of construction include access via Old Farnley Road.
Mayor Cr Danny Claridge said the new transfer stations would change the way residents dispose of waste at the Landfill.
‘Residents will no longer have to drive up to a muddy landfill cell to dispose of waste,’ said Cr Claridge. ‘The new transfer station will allow you to unload waste and recyclables from your vehicle in a safer, easier and cleaner way.’
The transfer station is designed to maximise efficiencies and reduce the carbon footprint of waste disposal in Benalla Rural City. It will feature:
An undercover e-waste and recyclables area providing all-weather access and harvesting water supply for the site. An elevated sawtooth bin arrangement for waste drop-off significantly increasing operational efficiencies and reducing the carbon footprint of waste disposal. Sealed roads and drainage systems ensuring safe movement for vehicles and pedestrians. A layout designed to encourage residents to recycle as much as possible before accessing the general waste disposal area. Off grid solar power and an LED lighting system, which provides passive light during morning and evening open hours. A volume-based fee system allows the customer to pay upon entry without having to use the weighbridge. The project addresses priority actions in the North East Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan 2017, the Benalla Rural City Council Waste Management Minimisation Strategy and the Victorian Waste & Resource Recovery policy targets.
‘We are grateful to the Victorian Government for the Resource Recovery Infrastructure Fund and E-waste Infrastructure Fund. This grant funding contributed significantly to the cost of construction,’ said Cr Claridge.
‘We look forward to seeing the lasting improvements this project will have in Benalla Rural City.’ For more information about waste management in Benalla Rural City, go to our Landfill, Waste & Recycling page.
