Music, murals, face painting and a free barbecue are just some of the activities to celebrate completion of the White Rock Connectivity Project on Saturday 26 Saturday.

The White Rock Connectivity Project was completed as part of the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland funding program and includes a 2.6km fitness loop which provides an opportunity for residents to test their fitness.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the trail included a series of checkpoints to help improve your fitness and extra pathways have improved connectivity between the schools and parks within the area.

“Connectivity is crucial to all suburbs, and the White Rock Fitness Trail and Connectivity Project provides links between schools, shops and parks throughout White Rock,” Cr Manning said.

“However, this is not an ordinary pathway project. The fitness trail consists of a 2.6km loop which takes you past natural reserves and along established sealed walking paths, there are checkpoints and markers along the route so that walkers or runners can continue to improve their fitness.

“The trail incorporates two large parks – Reys Park and Khalu Park – where trail users to break off and explore the different activities on offer in the park, such as basketball or group fitness.”

Division 3 Councillor Cathy Zeiger said the community celebration was a free event for the entire community.

“There’ll be plenty of activities for the whole family at the community celebration including a scientific hub hosted by Trinity Anglican School, hula-hoop workshops, henna tattoos, face painting and much more,” Cr Zeiger said.

“We have the ‘White Rock Rocks’ painted rock treasure hunt. It’s a treasure hunt which aims to spread kindness one rock at a time.

“Participants paint their own rock and hide it on any track or trail, anywhere. When you find another person’s painted rock you continue the fun and re-hide it along your favourite track or trail.

“Local artist Dan Wallwork will also be completing a mural on the utility box on Tiffany Street, I encourage all the community come along and pick up a paint brush to mark their mark in this communal mural – it will add colour to the neighbourhood.

“The Great Barrier Reef Lions Club will be hosting a free BBQ so those people who have been out on the trail can fuel their fitness.”

The White Rock Fitness Trail is a joint initiative of Cairns Regional Council and the Queensland Government.
