Ready, set, play!
Bayside City Council 25 Jun 2021

Every child in Bayside can get excited to play at the highly anticipated, new all ages and all abilities playground now open at Thomas Street Reserve, Hampton.

The state-of-the-art playground offers something for everyone: a splash play area with water spitting dragons, wheelchair trampolines, an accessible jousting inspired flying fox for two, a parkour course with balancing bridge and even a DJ booth.

Bayside Mayor, Cr Laurence Evans OAM said the $3 million Thomas Street playground is Bayside’s first dedicated all abilities playground and is an extraordinary show of collaboration, innovation and design.

“This playground is incredible and such an asset to the Bayside community,” Cr Evans OAM said.

“There’s just so much for users to explore from the giant mouse wheel, fairy carousel and goblin climber to the giant bird’s nest, iconic wooden fortress and water play area.

The best thing; it’s been designed to ensure that people living with disability can enjoy it too.”

Ringed with a 500m walking track around the Thomas Street Reserve to encourage people to be active, the playground also features an area with equipment for older adults to work on their balance, coordination and fitness.

The centrepiece of the playground is a timber castle, a nostalgic nod to the former wooden structure that used to sit on the site.

“A playground of this calibre would not have been possible without the input and collaboration from the community and I’m so excited for the next generation of Baysiders to enjoy this sensational new playground,” Cr Evans OAM said.

The upgrade was designed by ric McConaghy with construction undertaken by Glascott Landscape & Civil and equipment supplied by Lark Industries.

Over 2,800 understorey plants were planted throughout the play area with 50 new trees added and the original mature trees retained.

The playground also features picnic shelters, barbecues and a new toilet block constructed by the More Building Group, featuring Bayside’s second Changing Places facility, to support visitors with more complex needs.

The new playground delivers opportunities for children of all abilities to swing, bounce, slide and splash together.

Thomas Street playground, Hampton is a dynamic play experience not to be missed and is now open and ready for play.
