The transformation of Eden’s Barclay Street Sporting Complex has taken another huge step forward, with construction commencing on the new pavilion building, which will include change rooms, a kiosk, public toilets, storage facilities and all abilities access.

Situated in the north-east corner of the precinct, the new facility will service the cricket, Australian rules, netball and tennis clubs and represents a key element in the realisation of the masterplan for the site.

Wollongong-based Davone Constructions Pty Ltd will undertake the build on behalf of Council, with a projected completion date of December 2021.

Bega Valley Shire Council’s Manager of Leisure and Recreation, John Grady said the project is a great example of what can be achieved by a dedicated group of stakeholders, with strong cross-community support.

“We have really appreciated the hard work and goodwill of the user groups at Barclay Street during the development of the masterplan and the pavilion project, and it will be very exciting to see it come to fruition,” Mr Grady said.

Member for Bega Andrew Constance, said the new facility has been made possible thanks to funding from the state, as well as some generous donations from the broader community.

“The NSW government is pleased to be the major funding partner contributing $653,948 to this important project through Round 2 of the Stronger Country Communities Fund, allowing council to use this as a solid foundation to plan the project and get it off the ground,” Mr Constance said.

“This project is exactly what the Stronger Country Communities fund is all about. Bringing together community users in a collaborative way and building infrastructure to better support those users.

“Additionally, generous donations from the Business Council of Australia ($50,000), the Unite and Raise fund spearheaded by the Wentworthville Leagues Club ($170,000), and Newscorp ($10,000) will significantly increase the amenity and usability of the new pavilion.”

Along with the new pavilion, the masterplan for the Barclay Street complex includes an upgrade to the soccer clubhouse, a major upgrade to the skatepark, the construction of a new all-inclusive playspace, the establishment of a set down area for the Cruise Ship shuttle bus service, a memorial garden and a network of pathways to link these disparate recreational elements together. This work is expected to be completed by late 2022.
