If taking things easy feels like hard work, Corangamite Shire’s free relaxation sessions might help you unwind.
The last in a program or 50 free sessions, six workshops have been rescheduled because of the recent coronavirus circuit-breaker lockdown.
The sessions aim to help community members maintain good mental health through different active and passive approaches that suit their own personalities.
It is also an opportunity for people to try something new and see if it is for them.
Josh McKenzie will take three relaxed tae kwon do classes and Angela Priess will conduct three ‘sound bath’ meditation sessions.
Like more vigorous tae kwon do, the relaxed sessions will combine martial arts techniques with the philosophy and traditional teachings of Rhee Tae Kwon Do. Participants will learn how to apply physical and mental strength in their day-to-day life. Tae kwon do aims to give practitioners a strong sense of justice, fortitude, compassion, humility and resolve.
The ‘sound bath’ meditation incorporates gentle sounds and calming vibrations created by singing bowls, harps, lyre, tuning forks, flutes, drum, wind chimes and wind gongs. The wash of sound vibrations provides a unique, supported, meditative space to help participants let go of fixed thought patterns and release tension.
Corangamite Mayor Ruth Gstrein said it was important to be aware of our stress levels during this period of uncertainty, and to actively take steps to relax.
“I don’t need to point out that there have been a lot of ups and downs over past months,” Cr Gstrein said.
“Running at a heightened level of caution for a prolonged period can make us feel anxious. It’s perfectly normal to feel that way.
“Taking time out to relax and regather ourselves mentally and emotionally is a really good investment in our long-term wellbeing.
“Many residents have made the most of the previous relaxation sessions and I encourage people to register for these latest workshops.”
All events will follow COVIDSafe guidelines. Participants must bring a mask, check in, and practice social distancing.
Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing, bring a bottle of water and arrive to the session 5-10 minutes early.
Meditation should bring a yoga mat or blanket to lie on, a warm blanket to lie under and a pillow.
Registrations are required. Please book here, call Lucy Quinn on 0429 505 181 or email [email protected] .
The sessions are funded by the State Government’s Community Activation and Social Isolation (CASI) initiative. The program supports people who have lost their regular social networks during the coronavirus pandemic.
