New amenities at Nell E Robinson Park a win-win for community, local industry

A new look amenities block at Nell E Robinson Park is open and ready for community use after undergoing a major upgrade.

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Environment and Community Committee Chair Councillor James O’Shea said the new amenities block would provide a better experience for users.

“Council is committed to ensuring that all members of our community have an opportunity to participate in sport and have equal access to our playing fields and sporting facilities,” Cr O’Shea said.

The new amenities block will give sporting groups, schools, personal trainers, residents and everyone else equal access to facilities regardless of ability or gender.

Cr O’Shea said the project was required to replace the ageing amenities block which was constructed in 1981.

“The previous amenities building was demolished and replaced with a new building to meet current building standards and facility demand,” he said.

“The new facility includes people with disabilities compliant toilets, ambulant compliant toilets, unisex toilets, unisex showers and first-aid room.

“A new pedestrian walkway to connect the car park to the new amenities block was also delivered as part of the project.”

TRC Finance and Business Strategy Chair Cr Geoff McDonald said the project was delivered through Council’s Pandemic Response Investment Program.

“The renewal of the amenities block was one of the projects accelerated as part of our pandemic response,” Cr McDonald said.

“In 2020 Council allocated an additional $50 million over and above the annual capital works program to support our local businesses and keep the Region’s economy ticking during the pandemic to ensure there was continued investment in the Toowoomba Region. 

“This is one of the projects designed specifically to provide genuine opportunities for the private sector with a strong focus on local suppliers first.

“It was great to see Toowoomba-based construction company Taddio Building Group awarded the construction tender and engaging local subcontractors and suppliers to deliver which is a great result for our community.

“Engaging local suppliers was the number one goal of this program. A new apprentice was employed by the successful local contractor, Taddio Building Group as a result of this very project.

“Council is committed to revitalising our infrastructure and facilities for the betterment of our communities. This project’s been a win-win for local sport, the community and local industry.” 

The project has been prioritised in Netball Queensland's State Wide Facilities Strategy (2018-25) and Council’s Sport, Active Recreation and Healthy Living Plan (2019-26).
