Community members are invited to attend Council’s annual White Ribbon fundraiser on Thursday 29 July from 9.30am–12pm at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.
The event is hosted by Cardinia Shire Council in partnership with Aligned Leisure and Outlook Victoria and raises awareness of, and funds for, White Ribbon Australia family violence prevention programs.
This year’s guest speaker is Phil Cleary, equality advocate, AFL legend and former federal MP, who will talk about the role of community groups and businesses in ending family violence. Phil has been at the forefront of the campaign to end family violence after his sister Vicki was killed by her former partner 34 years ago.
The event will also include the announcement of the 2021 Garry McQuillan and Tony Fitzgerald Award recipients. These awards recognise men for their continued efforts in raising awareness and preventing men’s violence against women.
Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Owen said Council’s continued focus on family violence prevention was critical following a challenging 12 months for the community.
“We know the last year has been particularly hard in terms of stress and anxiety which, unfortunately, can have a knock-on effect in family violence.
“Cardinia Shire has one of the highest reported incidents of family violence in Victoria - a heartbreaking statistic and one we are working hard to change through the collective efforts of the community led Together We Can initiative.
“Council’s acknowledgement and position on the issue of family violence is clear: silence is no longer acceptable, and we ask the whole community to build healthier and respectful relationships with one another so our current and future generations can thrive.
“Through events like these we can improve men’s understanding of what constitutes family violence and how we can stand up, speak out and seek support when needed,” he said.
