Lithgow Aboriginal Education Consultative Group

Lithgow City Council has acknowledged during NAIDOC Week 2021,  the work of Lithgow’s Aboriginal Education Consultative Group that has been in existence for over 10 years.

The NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. promotes respect, empowerment and self-determination and believes the process of collaborative consultation is integral to equal partnership and is fundamental to the achievement of equality.

The NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. advocates cultural affirmation, integrity and the pursuit of equality to ensure that the unique and diverse identity of Aboriginal students is recognised and valued.

Current chair of the AECG Aunty Kym Cama is committed to representing the needs of the First Nation’s community, especially in the education system. “The young ones coming up are the future of this community, and celebrating our culture, our language and our history is important during NAIDOC and throughout the whole year,” says Aunty Kym. “Closing the gap for First Nation’s people, in education, in health and in opportunities is ongoing work that the whole community needs to be a part of.”

The Lithgow AECG is working towards a NAIDOC celebration later in the year that includes the whole community and that invites Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people to come together to share culture, stories and song.

Council is proud to work with the AECG and looks forward to the Junior AECG which is in the formation stages. This will be an opportunity for young people who are still in school to actively contribute to the work of the AECG.
