Thanks to the ‘Hungry 4 Success’ training offered at Glen Park Community Centre, the recent graduates are now highly attractive candidates for employers and better prepared to enter the workforce.
The program, hosted by Glen Park Community Centre and held in partnership with the Eastland Shopping Centre and property services organisation Glad Group, culminates in a mentorship session where students learn from experienced workers. The 10-week course teaches job-readiness skills such as how to write a resume, the importance of punctuality and building confidence in the workplace.
The program is targeted towards those aged 16 to 25, who are out of school or early school leavers, and who are unemployed or underemployed. Participants gain experience in careers including hospitality, security, concierge services, cleaning and hospitality. They also learn essential work skills, such as communications and how to work in a team.
Recent graduate Thomas Jaffer said he feels more confident he can gain employment in a field he is passionate about.
“I was interested in security before and this course makes me feel like I’m headed in the right direction. I’d now like to go on to further study, but I’m not sure whether to pursue cyber-security or security,” Thomas said.
“The course was very thorough but delivered at a pace that was easy to follow. I learned more about the skills I need and the day-to-day duties of working in security. We also learned important life skills and I feel much better prepared for my future.”
The most recent group graduated on Thursday 17 June, with many planning to pursue employment or further studies.
Maroondah Mayor, Councillor Kylie Spears, congratulated all graduates and participants of the program.
“Well done to all these inspiring young people. I’m sure their efforts will be rewarded, whichever path they choose to follow,” Cr Spears said.
“Thank you also to all the program coordinators and mentors who have played an important role in the achievements of the graduates.”
