Noni Drew’s painting ‘I like that’ has been voted by Bayside Gallery visitors as their favourite painting in the 2020/21 Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize. Noni has been awarded $1,000 for the People’s Choice Award.

According to Drew, Instagram has changed the way we view and consume art.

“On the one hand it democratises art, however, when culture is fed through the social media machine it becomes flatter and much less interesting,” Drew explained.

“Viewing art through the lens of Instagram transforms the work of art into a documented object.”

Drew spent her formative years in Hampton, attending Firbank Grammar, and after a decade of living overseas she has returned to Bayside to raise her family.

In 2019 Drew completed a Masters of Contemporary Art from the Victorian College of the Art, University of Melbourne and received First Class Honours.

Despite the Gallery being closed for three weeks during Melbourne’s lock down, the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize exhibition attracted just over 800 visitors.
